New footbridge over the A38 lifted into place

A new steel 90 tonne footbridge, which will ultimately provide pedestrian access into Peddimore has been lifted into place over the A38 by IM Properties’ project contractor, Winvic.

The installation was successfully completed ahead of schedule, allowing the road to be reopened 12 hours earlier than scheduled – and ahead of the three-week embargo on road closures during the Commonwealth Games being held in Birmingham.

The 6.5-metre-wide bridge, which soars 20 metres above the highway was specially manufactured offsite, and transported to Minworth in three parts, where it was assembled, before being lifted into place by two large cranes and six remotely controlled transporters.

With the work being undertaken as the UK experienced record temperatures, activity was carried out to avoid construction during the hottest periods of the day.

Winvic has now begun construction of footpaths on the east and west of the bridge, connecting Minworth to Walmley Ash Lane to provide future pedestrian access through the site, and over the A38 into Minworth.

If you have any questions about construction-related activity or queries about anything you have seen on-site, you can contact the team directly by calling 01604 678960 or emailing peddimore@winvic.co.uk.
